Backstage ready to slay the Freestyle Festival 15 Spring Edition with the Wattage dance squad!
I love being able to give younger new talent opportunities in their journey – and as always meeting people who bring a positive energy is also beautiful as they are: Gabriella Garcia, choreographer/dancer Tevyn Cole, Lisa Rubi, Kayla Simone, Ameerah Thayer, Kendie Jones, Jasmine Boyes.
Multi-talented John Gregory and Nate Allen Smith of SRL.
Actress Tisha Campbell and new artist Dani Wright friends of Nate Allen Smith of SRL came to support.
We only had 10 minutes but were prepared to make the best of it.

Jody Watley, multi-platinum singer/songwriter/producer/independent label owner and style icon is one of the architects of 21st century Pop/R&B/Dance music.
From her groundbreaking marriage of rap & R&B (1987’s “Friends,” a collaboration with hip-hop legends Eric B. & Rakim) to her vision-forward marriage of high fashion, street fashion and music in the ‘80s (long before it became the norm), to her fusion of jazz and underground club culture with keen pop instincts, and the ease with which she crossed and still crosses genre, Watley forged the template that is now everybody’s playbook.
Listed as one of Billboard Magazine’s Top Female Artists and Top Dance Artists of All Time in 2018; Winner of the Best New Artist Grammy in 1987, Jody Watley’s entire career has been about looking forward, drawing inspiration from personal heroes and iconoclasts always ten steps ahead of the pack since her days as the original female lead and sound of the group Shalamar. The Chicago native’s eclectic repertoire – R&B, hip-hop, House, jazz, pop, drum & bass, ambient, spoken-word – is built on a positive vision and a strong taste for artistic and aesthetic risk. The Jody Watley concert experience is an energetic thoughtful music journey in any format from the full comprehensive concert, pop freestyle, 80’s, 90’s, intimate jazz, love and soul, to her Shalamar disco funk days to the new UK hits with SRL..there’s something for everyone depending on the configuration and event.”

Here are some of my favorite moments topped with being the recipient of 2017 Crossover Music Icon on the broadcast new awards show Black Music Honors. One of the special elements of the show is their connection with National Museum of African American Music. The sculpture “Traveling Through Time Rhapsody and Rhythm” represents 50 plus genres of African American Music spanning 400 years of American culture designed by Jamaal B. Sheats exemplifying the mission of NMAAM to celebrate, preserve and educate contributions African Americans make to American music.
The music tribute by Sevyn Streeter and Vivian Greene was beautifully done.
A Jody Watley Inspired Collection at LA Fashion Week Presentation by Richard Hallmarq
Great Concerts – one of my favorite was The Greek Theatre Freestyle Festival and I really enjoy the different of generations and diversity in my squad. The little ones call themselves WatleyBabies. Music transcends all to those open to it.
