One of my favorite splurges and items in the world are great candles. I burn candles everyday, take them with me when I travel. Fragrant and comforting – they are a plus to ant home or environment. The theme for my new album “PARADISE” really lends itself to this extension of me that I’m excited to share with you. The scents are my favorites and I’m sure you’ll love and enjoy as much as I do.

This limited edition candle set ‘PARADISE’ and ‘SANCTUARY’ comes elegantly packaged in classic white box with black logo lettering and image on opposite side of box (autographed upon special request). The ‘PARADISE’ candle is in the citrus family of scents; a delicate lemon verbena with subtle vanilla notes taking you away from the stress of everyday life, very spa like. The ‘SANCTUARY’ candle is a sexy calming blend of mesquite wood, neroli and oak moss. You will truly leave the world behind with the ‘SANCTUARY’ candle. The fragrant soy wax candles are made with the highest quality of soy blend wax with cotton wicks formulated to fill up a room, burn clean and last a long time. Burn time approx. 50 hours for each.

Happy Birthday Arie. Reflections.

My son Arie celebrated his 22nd birthday October 17. It’s always a time of celebration and reflection for me, as his Mom as well. Away from the spotlight, my priority when they were growing up was to be present in their lives. I’m still present and involved though that role has changed an morphed into something different since both are young adults now. It’s not easy to be the child of someone the public knows. I’ve shielded them from the public wanting them to maintain their anonymity, keep them grounded, validated and confident in who they are. However, I’m like most proud Mom’s – sometimes you just want to brag a bit of how awesome your children are and how much you love them. I asked his permission before posting to ask if it was OK for me to share on my social media pages – he said yes. He is the best son in the world. I’m so proud of how responsible and solid of a young man he is, loving, kind hearted, funny, hard working, intelligent and handsome of course. I miss his presence being home – but proud that he is in college in New York studying business laying the groundwork to fulfill his ambitions, dreams and personal happiness in a city he’s always loved. He’s also held a part time job since high school – which is something instilled in both children, a strong work ethic. I miss dressing up for Halloween, playing action heroes, and so much more from when he was little – my favorite guy in the world. I don’t miss getting him off of World of Warcraft to do homework in junior high! Now, we FaceTime, text, share funny memes, and talk nearly every day. I cherish our relationship and bond. I am inspired by my son Arie and my daughter Lauren.

Here’s to Arie –  the best son in the universe!! I was there for his 21st (pictured in collage) and can’t wait to see him next week when I travel to New York for a visit and belated birthday celebration.

Celebrating 25 years of my second album. Most fans think of my solo debut as the breakthrough and it was – as well as being trendsetting in style and video. However my second album is the one that was really quietly the most pioneering and to me overshadowed. My infusion of high fashion, commercial ad campaigns and layouts – uncommon for any black artist at the time, and only by one other Madonna. ‘Larger Than Life’ ushered in a raised bar for other female artists that would follow.  The pioneering “Friends”  featuring Eric B & Rakim; the first to feature Pop/R&B/Hip-Hop 16 bar verses and crossing over R&B, Pop, Dance, Hip Hop – as well as a genre crossing video featuring transgender, drag queens, underground club culture, B-Boys and Girls, voguing and Jean Paul-Gaultier couture blended into a mix of high end and street chic as well as my highest charting ballad ‘Everything.” There was no press release to stir controversy and bring attention about the casting of the video – for me it wasn’t about that. Everyone in the video was real, friends of friends – not models or professionals. Tyrone Procter helped cast it. Eric B and Rakim called some of their friends. What I wanted to represent the types of clubs I liked dancing at full of of types of people united by the music and stepping out in style to get down on the dance floor. It was a real club scene in the west village on a hot summer afternoon in NYC. It went over the heads of a lot of people..my label didn’t know what to make of it, and weren’t happy with it – but let me do what I envisioned and I’m thankful.

I also found success overseas in the Japan, Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom among others as well. It was always a challenge because I wasn’t the typical ‘urban black artist’ and was always in a struggle to shine on my own terms, remaining true to myself, wanting to have standards, authenticity to my artistry. 25 years later this is still true in everything I do whether on the commercial radar or not. It’s true no matter what your job or career is – be the best you.

Thought of The Day. Shine.

shine_quote

Always choose to love yourself, while working to be better each day – and never play yourself small. Keep your inner light glowing outward. This does not mean be obnoxious or have an overly bloated ego. My take is always try to give and be at your best and make people rise to your occasion and by doing so you will bring out the best in others as well – hopefully.

The Watley by Jerome C. Rousseau Autumn Winter 2014 Has Arrived

I’m so grateful and humbled to have a shoe named after me – as a longtime shoe-a-holic it’s really the best! Jerome is so talented as a designer – kind and gracious most of all. When he said I inspired a shoe as well as his Autumn/Winter Collection 2014 my heart was full, my smile as wide an ocean.
