I appreciate the fact that this new website is focused on positivity and interviews; not gossip on women in music, television and film. They’ve been incredibly supportive of “PARADISE” on Twitter and other social media; I wanted to show my support to Belinda James and the Who’s That Lady Entertainment team. If you’re tired of gossip based media and trust me, I understand the commerce and need for a bit of entertainment and gossip here and there; however there should also be room for other mediums such as this – support these alternatives.

I haven’t done press for ‘PARADISE’ rather, I’ve let my blog posts speak to the process, inspirations, journey etc. We did quite a lot for the single release of “Nightlife.’ It would be great to do television however it’s quite a challenge without a gossip lead in to talk about, an agent with CAA who is packaging guests (politics) – that’s the reality of the moment. I’ll be chatting with online radio show host Steven Knight on Monday September 29, 2014 at 10 PM EST talking “Paradise.” They’ve been very persistent to have me on, and we’re Twitter friends ..so there you go!
In an ongoing music journey, it was cool to come across this review from September 2001 DJ Magazine for the single “Saturday Night Experience.” The single was lifted from an import released I recorded for Japan “Jody Watley Presents The Saturday Night Experience Vol. 1” – at that time I was ready to step away completely from music – instead stepping away from commercial minded music and all that goes with it. Quality has never waned, when popularity may have.
Most artists will say they don’t read reviews or are not big on reviews – but will admit that it’s a good feeling when you read a really positive one like this where the writer really gets in the music at hand. This was another music pivot for me and began my exploration and shift into underground club electronic fused with nu skool jazz, drum and bass and other ambient sounds. I listened to single to Giant Step, purveyors of quality eclectic and soulful music offerings through my Avitone imprint established in 1996 – also with a mantra of fueling quality music.
Shout out to longtime collaborator and music director/keyboardist in my band Rodney Lee (we wrote and produced the original together)..Ron Trent, and Blaze – still love these..available at iTunes and various digital outlets.
I’ve spent most of the month helping to care for my Mom who recently underwent hip replacement surgery.
In the meantime, the “PARADISE” CD continues to sell quite well around the world exclusively through The Jody Watley Boutique : Shop Here and at digital outlets such as iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, etc. The general consensus is for ‘DANCER’ to be the next single and video. I recently posted on my Facebook page and asked what my fans thought.
I’ll be launching a luxury soy PARADISE candle collection inspired by songs to add to my online boutique. I’m a huge candle lover and burn them constantly in my home, so it makes sense. The first will be ‘SANCTUARY.’ More details soon.

#TBT #Classic “Everything” cover art from my 1989 second solo album ‘Larger Than Life’ my commerical Pop/R&B era. #4 Hot 100, #3 R&B, #11 Adult Contemporary – beautifully written by Gardner Cole and composer James Newton-Howard produced by Andre Cymone, with me at the helm as executive producer. I still love singing it – 25 years later, I’m proud to say that about all of my songs. I never wanted to sing anything back then or now – that would make me feel regret and not age well. The song remains a crowd pleaser. The cover is simple and understated but still very chic and timeless. I’m wearing a custom made burnt orange velvet dress that I designed and was tailored by Sylvia Payne-Loveless the oldest sister of Andre Cymone who used to sew for me from time to time back then.
– the dress, also worn in my Meisel sessions.

In an interview with writer / author Ernest Hardy:
“The past is to be celebrated, of course, but it’s mainly there for us to build on. We’re not meant to get stuck in it,” says Jody Watley about her own rich artistic legacy. In the show & prove style that fans have admired for over three decades, the Grammy-winning hyphenate (singer / songwriter / producer / businesswoman / OG fashionista) is pulling out all the stops in support of her retro-futuristic new album PARADISE. Upcoming tour dates will not only feature inspired overhauls of classic hits and fan favorites, but will showcase the diva’s current creative streak with selections from Paradise – a state-of-now dance-floor scorcher whose lush, upbeat, soulful production and life affirming lyrics are steeped in classic disco/R&B aesthetics (think Chic, Change, Barry White, Larry Levan) while being firmly rooted in the here and now. (The fierce, beat-heavy MdCL remix of “Tonight’s the Night” is the future soundtrack of runways, drag balls and dance-floors alike.) Of the collection’s taut seven tracks she observes, “Long albums, to me, are out of step with the times. Many classic albums of the 80’s had as few as six songs. Isaac Hayes’ Hot Buttered Soul had four, though they were all ten minutes or more. It was really about the quality, and as always that’s where I’m coming from.”
Quality defines Ms. Watley’s multi-media empire, which includes her record label, music publishing company, several TV production deals currently in the pipeline – and ownership of the Shalamar trademark. Being at the helm of the Shalamar brand allows her to give fans what they’ve been clamoring for since she left the iconic R&B/pop trio. Shalamar was formed in 1977 as a vocal dance trio by Don Cornelius of the Soul Train television show and shortly became a top group with soulful disco sounds. She’s rebooting some of their songs as part of her new set-list, fusing the group’s patented sound (rich harmonies, soulful melodies, funky musical beds and high style) with her penchant for current sounds and underground club movements. Longtime fans will especially appreciate that she’ll be teaming up with Gerald Brown, Shalamar’s original lead male vocalist, for the makeover. (That’s his powerhouse voice on the group’s first hit “Take that to the Bank.”) “This won’t be some oldies revue, though, where we holler out do you remember this?” she laughs. “What we’re doing is about the here and now, about fresh sounds and positive energy. The songs will be classic favorites like ‘Take That to the Bank,’ ‘The Second Time Around,’ and ‘A Night To Remember,’ recent global hit single “Nightlife’ fused with some of the Jody Watley catalogue – but the vision is definitely forward. A show to remember.
