Random Thoughts. The Simple Things In Life

elmersglue_pasteFor some reason when I woke up this morning, one of my first thoughts was being a little girl in elementary school at Thanksgiving time. The smell of school paste felt real (I loved that smell). I could remember myself excited to cut out colorful shapes on  construction paper,  coloring in the templates provided by the teacher. It was with great joy to complete a paper turkey or making autumn leaves to take home – my creation. It really is the simple things in life that can make you smile at any given moment.

I had a blast in Shreveport/Bossier, Louisiana. The people were so nice everywhere we went. Thank you to Frank “Penny” Edwards for making the trip and experience so special and for having me and the new Shalamar with Nate Smith and Rosero be a part of this experience. I’d never been to a rodeo – never been around real cowboys. It was unforgettable – yes, I had no problem getting in the dirt, riding a horse, or even taking a bull by the horns.

Thought of The Day. Bricks To Success

woman_quote_success

This continues to be a running undercurrent theme in my life journey. It’s not what happens to us, it’s how we respond, rebound or simply keep it pushing forward. Never being discouraged for long – just keep on keeping on.

I was reminded of this on my trip to Louisiana for the Real Cowboys Association National Black Rodeo Finals this weekend. The promoter let me know someone behind the scenes had been badmouthing me – without naming names. They were encouraging him to not book me, not to book the new Shalamar  in favor of another artist – how much trouble I’d be..such a ‘bitch’ to work with, a diva..immediately my people and I knew where this probably came from an association to someone from my past or someone who represents them. That’s the level of people they’re with. This is a shady business full of people throwing bricks at any given time, just for someone out here as I wrote – just living my life. This is to anyone who may be in a similar situation at your job. Hang in there.  As hard as you’re working, you never know when someone else is working just as hard for another not to succeed. Imagine that – someone attempting to block another’s blessings with lies – again. I’m a woman with standards, a total professional – some will always resent that.  Initially I was going to keep this to myself. but it’s important for me to convey the things that go on behind the scenes and some of the obstacles I face just being me; as well as a cautionary tale for other women in business.

The  promoter was so delighted that he’d trusted his own instincts and not listened – he said he wanted to see for himself. That he did.

The result – “You’re nothing like they said you’d be..I just love you girl..this has been one of my best experiences with any artist and can’t wait to work with you and the guys again!”

And the world keeps on spinning. If something is truly for you – no one can take that away..hard as they might try.

Thank God and the universe for another lesson and opportunity.

May the obstacles and bricks lead to more stepping stones to success.

Scenes from Honda Center, Anaheim – great night..I loved dancing with all of the kids and dancers which was new for me. Rosero McCoy did an outstanding job putting it together. The girls all rocked classic Jody Watley jumbo hoops with style as a nod to my early solo career and the Real Love video.

Thank You Ramshead Onstage and Blues Alley

bluesalley_sign_shalamar_reloaded_jodywatleyAll of the shows on our DC and Maryland swing were memorable for a variety of reasons. Each venue had great staff, food – and all of the audiences who came out in force to check us out made the experience an absolute joy. New members Nate Smith and Rosero McCoy are being embraced and applauded at every show. Nate steps out into the audience to screams now as he handles the male lead vocals – I love that! With his infectious energy and charm, he’s hard to resist. Rosero is smashing the stage and mesmerizing with his moves and charm as well. The audience can feel what we have is real  – the connection and what we’re bringing to the stage. Performing ‘SlowDance’ is also cool because right away with the intro – people respond which represents they know the song now and sing along as they sway with us side to side.

My new single ‘DANCER’ is a highlight of the new Jody Watley set – as I get people to feel the release of ‘werking it and getting in the music!” It’s a party but I make sure to send everyone back into the world with love and gratitude for being alive – living in the moment, the now.

Nate, Rosero and I also had our first movie day together. I can tell you this was also a first for me – in my previous Shalamar life that would have never happened.

Thank you Ramshead Onstage and Blues Alley (it was an honor to be a part of the 50th year anniversary milestone) for having us. Thank you to everyone who came out. I’m thankful for my blessings and being able to share the gift of music.

A special thank you to Omar Nelson in his new position as coordinator at Radio One’s the nationally syndicated John Monds Show ‘Love and R&B.’

Nate, Rosero and I were delighted to be guests on air to talk about our new single “SlowDance” our concerts and how we all came together. I also answered a fun relationship question to cap it off.

It isn’t often that artists get to go on air and spend time – and we were with veteran on air personality John Monds for over an hour, as he spun classic and contemporary R&B. I remember John from his days in Los Angeles on 92.3 The Beat.

This was a much appreciated opportunity.

With my Shalamar hotties Nate Smith and Rosero McCoy.

What a great night of music. 3 songs in the seated audience gave the new Shalamar a standing ovation. It was such a beautiful moment. In all of my years – I’ve never really experienced something like this. It was as if they wanted us to know we are supported despite any outside negativity others are trying to create. Check out what Spins and Blends had to say – along with some pretty cool photo’s. I’m in twists, which I have not worn in forever – for these dates! Here

A couple of fan comments from my Facebook page:

Thank you Jody, for the fantastic performance last night in Annapols. Your detractors need to see the show before they open their mouths about Shalamar. Loved you, loved the band, and loved the guys. Who knew you rapped too?! – Paul Saxon

“Having last see you perform with Shalamar 32 years ago in Walt Disney World’s Cinderella Castle I would say last night was just as magical. Great show from you, the guys and the band laying down the groove!” – Scott Streibich

Next up Blues Alley November 6-8 – Saturday night’s shows are sold out!
