Making that move onto a new chart benchmark, Jody Watley has her first chart entry on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Network Chart with her reimagined interpretation of the Bob Marley classic “Waiting In Vain” produced by Watley and longtime co-producer Rodney Lee.
The first entry as a solo artist was 1987 with her Grammy Winning Debut’s “Looking for A New Love.” In a career spanning decades Watley’s music has continued to cross genres with notable chart entries in Pop, R&B, Hip Hop/Rap, Dance, and Electronica.
Going back further to Watley’s teen years as an original member of the Disco / R&B trio Shalamar “Take That To The Bank” in 1978 you can also add the Disco Chart.

IT TAKES OUR VILLAGE marks the 11thannual Human First Gala, and symbolizes the Center’s deep commitment to bringing diverse individuals together as we build and empower ‘our village’ recognizing the contributions of individuals, businesses and other organizations to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community in Chicago.
Human First provides an opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate past accomplishments, while we look forward to the work ahead as we continue to build a world where we are, above all, Human First. In addition to raising vital funds to support Center on Halsted programs and services, the Human First Award will be presented to an outstanding civic leader for their important contributions to the advancement of Chicago’s LGBTQ movement. The 2018 Human First awardees include Dr. Tom Klein & David Gitomer, Marcia Lipetz, and Victoria Raymont. The Community Spirit Award will be presented to the ACLU of Illinois.
“On the heels of the her group venture Jody Watley & SRL’s surprise UK Soul hit single “The Mood” Alex Di Cio mix, Watley dropped a late winter jazz gem “Waiting In Vain” totally transforming the Bob Marley classic into her own elegant take. People expect dance music all the time from me and of course I love dance music but for anyone who has actually followed my career it’s full of eclectic choices and genre crossing. There have been a few to say, it’s too mellow and they only like my uptempo – they miss alot, too each their own. I’ve always approached my career like a painter – never covering the canvas with the same strokes and images. Life should be about setting new goals and challenging yourself and the universe to make things happen, that’s how I see it anyway. Generally speaking not much is expected of veteran legacy artists and I know there are those who have written me off many times over that’s the story of my life let doubters doubt and keep defying odds and expectations.
I set out to make my new group a success which is happening and it’s just awesome. As well to satisfy a longtime desire to have a successful jazz single is also happening right on the heels of “The Mood”.
