Jody Watley. Live and More.

When I perform in concert, one of the things I enjoy is leaving room for spontaneous moments for those of us onstage or those priceless moments an artist can never plan for with the audience. I feed on the love and energy – we all do.

This is a snippet of my makeover of the Diana Ross, Pam Sawyer penned classic ‘Love Hangover’. Though I did record a more faithful version of the original; it’s the downtempo ambient version I like the most for my style. Levi Seacer, a former member of Prince’s NPG is a stellar musician and a recent addition to my band provides that classic raw blend of soul, funk and rock. He took the vibe up several notches on this particular night. My band kicks ass, as does my show in the most unexpected ways. Don’t miss out the next time I’m in your town – I don’t come around often. There’s something to be said for rare, memorable and special occasions.

I love and live this principle.

“If I didn’t define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.” – Audre Lourde, poet, teacher, activist

Quote

“People think chutzpah is in the genes. It isn’t.. it’s in the needing and wanting and being willing to fall on your face. It isn’t fun.. who wants all that rejection, but life is sweeter if you make yourself do uncomfortable things.” – Helen Gurley Brown

Icons Of Style. Jody Watley with Pat Cleveland

One of my inspirations since junior high school is legendary 70’s runway icon, Pat Cleveland. I was so humbled and excited to meet her.

Art and Fashion. Antonio Lopez

I’ve loved and been a student of fashion and illustration since junior high school. Of my many aspirations, being an illustrator was one.  Biographies and anecdotes in history and pop culture are among my pleasures in literature; add fashion and disco to the mix – say no more I’m in.

While reading this month’s issue of VOGUE I was happy to see the impending September release of influential artist Antonio Lopez: Fashion, Art, Sex & Disco” by brothers Roger and Mauricio Padilha from Rizzoli Books. Can’t wait!

“..making a substantial dent in the annuals of pop history..” – Harper’s Bazaar, Jody Watley 1988 photographed by legendary Francesco Scavullo.

“The label at the time didn’t want to pay the fare for the trip to New York, not understanding how appearing in a fashion magazine would help sell records or raise the artists profile..but I knew, so I paid for the trip myself. It wouldn’t be long before labels would soon get it. I was familiar with the work of Scavullo because he’d photographed one of my inspirations growing up Diana Ross and I was an avid reader of VOGUE from childhood because my Mom always bought it. ” – Jody Watley
