Jody Watley Saturday Night Experience. Club Classic

In an ongoing music journey, it was cool to come across this review from September 2001 DJ Magazine for the single “Saturday Night Experience.” The single was lifted from an import released I recorded for Japan “Jody Watley Presents The Saturday Night Experience Vol. 1” – at that time I was ready to step away completely from music – instead stepping away from commercial minded music and all that goes with it. Quality has never waned, when popularity may have.

Most artists will say they don’t read reviews or are not big on reviews – but will admit that it’s a good feeling when you read a really positive one like this where the writer really gets in the music at hand.  This was another music pivot for me and began my exploration and shift into underground club electronic fused with nu skool jazz, drum and bass and other ambient sounds. I listened to single to Giant Step, purveyors of quality eclectic and soulful music offerings  through my Avitone imprint established in 1996 – also with a mantra of fueling quality music.

Shout out to longtime collaborator and music director/keyboardist in my band Rodney Lee (we wrote and produced the original together)..Ron Trent, and Blaze – still love these..available at iTunes and various digital outlets.

In the past, an artist would send out tons of copies of promotional discs to have their album reviewed. We have not done that. This collection is all about the love, the word of mouth, the appreciators of artistry, the fans – it’s in the music! The QHBlend is one of my favorite music blogs with Quentin Harrison always shining as a true music writer who knows his subjects objectively really examining and listening to the music and covering those elements. It’s In The Music with Paradise.

I can’t think of another collection of music, where there’s this type of organic and very fan-centric organic approach – with a sense of community sharing an exclusive item like ‘PARADISE.’ I look at it like a piece of art, as time goes on not everyone will be able to say and show this – much like works of art. What can be about Jody new cd “Paradise”, other it should come with an warning label, play when you want to hear music that will move you body and soul! 1. Nightlife… Just classic dance song, from top to bottom 2. Dancer… Work it… She calling all dancers to come to the floor, but beats from this jam, calls you no matter what,,, I feel the sounds from “Thank God It’s Friday” in this. 3. The Dawn… Jody Watley give us a another example why she was seen as a great dancer on Soul Train,,, yea, yea, 4. Tonight’s the Night… Fair warning playing this if you’re at the gym, running or bike riding, it will pump you up into doing more sit-ups for that sexy outfit you want to wear that night,,, and you will hear this jam at the clubs…. Dance till the sun comes up. 5. Paradise… So chic, cool, slick,,, and great just to shake your head to,,, put a smile on you face, and a vision of the islands. Or is that just me…. 6. We’re unsure about pressing CD’s, but considering a limited quantity after the digital release. If all goes according to the schedule, the “PARADISE” EP will arrive near the end of July. Share your thoughts about CD’s on my Official Facebook. So few fans buy music at all in this era of any artist (barring a few young mainstream superstar acts) – let alone CD’s, but we will consider offering a package in my online boutique.

The booklet to “Paradise” is also worth the music it accompanies, it is gorgeous with stellar photography from Albert Sanchez and make-up by Billy B. For “Paradise” which began with “NIGHTLIFE”, it’s all about glamour. Being older doesn’t mean old! Get out of your rut, be inspired – these are thoughts I wanted to convey with this project.

I recognize through my interactions on social media that many fans are content with older parts of my catalogue and have not grown with me. That said, it doesn’t stop me from growing and being passionate about moving forward. To those who remain enchanted and open to my continued music evolution; this EP packs an uptempo party punch.  I’m so thrilled! Everything I do is a labor of love and passion, “PARADISE” is no exception.

Have a listen to “SANCTUARY” inspired by ‘home’ and my children actually.  This is song my way of reminding everyone, after the party, the night out, work, grinding it out on a daily basis; to take care of the environment of your living space and what you create for yourself – your children (if you have them), spouses, etc.
