It all went down in downtown Los Angeles yesterday for Nate, Rosero and myself filming the video for the forthcoming new single “O.R.I.G.in.A.L.”
The last time I filmed a video in downtown Los Angeles was for ‘Don’t You Want Me’ many moons ago.
The day was beautiful and the action progressed nicely in the fashion district. Lensed by Q Burdette for Rosero Inc. the team behind my recent solo concept video for ‘Dancer.’
The song was inspired by a year of trolls and haters who have tried to derail our every effort, marginalize our efforts, discourage and attempts at poaching any interest on bookings with promoters..they troll and bash us from Youtube to every social media account we have as well-bound and determined to trash my name with slander, character assassination and attack or as well attempt to diminish my contributions as a solo artist down to my signature hoop earrings. They’ve been the first commenters on most interviews I’ve done over the past in in introducing the group. We are originals – not replacements and not trying to pretend we are anything other than ourselves – creating our own foundation and mark one effort at a time in whatever we do.
The experience has made us stronger as a group and gave us material for the song with an edgy sparse beat. Online bullies and trolls will always be around and don’t stop the progress – so I guess you can say we are turning our lemons into lemonade. That’s what you have to do in life..like I wrote awhile ago “The Beat Don’t Stop.”

Pre-Order “O.R.I.G.in.A.L. available for Pre-Order Now at Amazon and iTunes.
Release date: May 6 on my longstanding indie boutique label Avitone.
Avitone created in 1995 with the mantra of fueling quality music is another element of my career as a business woman and artist that I’m very proud of. Never waiting for anyone to give me anything or any easy opportunity – it’s always about the work, the journey and doing things with style and a level of quality to be proud of. You have to believe in yourself and if there’s no door – create one. Being an independent has it’s challenges but should never a deterrent.
Pre-Order the forthcoming new Shalamar Reloaded single at Amazon, other digital outlets are coming worldwide. We are excited to pushing forward..this single was inspired by haters..trolls..and the naysayers and shade throwers who have nothing better to do than go around trying to bring others down – as we proceed, we recommend it. Originals, us 3.
As always, I’m really excited about the upcoming concerts in Japan at Billboard Live. These concerts will close out an exciting 2014. I hired a new booking agent this year and it’s already paying off. In the past, I chose not to work so much because I was enjoying being a stay at home Mom raising her children though picking and choosing when to travel – a luxury of being a songwriter to so many hit singles. I’ll always be discerning about what and when to take jobs but I do feel a new enthusiasm for this part of the business. With the music of PARADISE, mixed in with a range of curated hits from both catalogs of Jody Watley and the new millennial SHALAMAR ™ adding to the set, it’s even more of a party. Rosero McCoy has done a great job creating new choreography for us. The ladies are enjoying Paul’Michael who brings such a fresh young energy and charm along with his own vocal style. The shows will only get better and we’re having a great time together. In the past, an artist would send out tons of copies of promotional discs to have their album reviewed. We have not done that. This collection is all about the love, the word of mouth, the appreciators of artistry, the fans – it’s in the music! The QHBlend is one of my favorite music blogs with Quentin Harrison always shining as a true music writer who knows his subjects objectively really examining and listening to the music and covering those elements. Quentin understands music pop culture, artistic growth and never holding commercial peaks and valleys against or for his subjects – as it should be. Read his observations about “PARADISE”: Here
I’ve been performing “Nightlife” live in concert for the past year or so. It’s been encouraging to see the positive reaction to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” The fans have responded positively and dancing along to it as if it’s already a familiar tune which bodes well! This is a nod to my Shalamar disco funk (including guest vocals from one of Shalamar’s lead vocalists Gerald “Take That To The Bank” Brown) past melded and updated into a distinctly modern Jody Watley funky soul dance jam.
