My arm wasn’t long enough to capture everyone onstage and the audience..the energy was electric. #selfie #stage #jodywatley

The atmosphere was electric. Thank you to Alan and Pacific Concert Group for another hot concert – Magic 92.5 for being a great sponsor and host and Valley View Casino Center. Thank you to the fans – such an enthusiastic audience!! These performances are brief and go by so fast – highlighting fan favorites classic hits, like ‘Don’t You Want Me’ – yes they do!

To my squad – Rosero McCoy who always makes sure the choreography and staging is fresh and on point, John ‘Havic’ Gregory, Eric McCoy, Michele ‘Soulchild’ Garman, Clarissa McElroy and Gene Tapia – you were all on fire!  Special thanks as well to the behind the scenes staff Wallace Butts, Jason Howell.

Jody Watley. Classic Thursday.

For this #TBT – a look back at my #1 workout tape “Dance to Fitness.” A first for a woman of color, my motivation was that there were no fitness tapes with black women a fact that baffled me. It was the era of Jane Fonda and Denise Austin..and then me! Light cardio dancing, it was an awesome opportunity and moment in my journey. It’s in the Music!

Jody Watley. Looking For A New Love.

Top-100-Best-Dance-Songs-From-80s-Ever-Jody_Watley_-_Looking_For_A_New_Love

I’m so thankful to have experienced this – thankful for my blessings and continued journey. I thank all of you who continue to show me love, support my music and encourage me each day!! — On January 6, 1987, January 6. My solo debut single “Looking For A New Love” was released (a Rihanna/Jody fan just told me on Instagram and I looked it up, love social media for things like this).. Of course it was a monumental debut, my first #1 single and a touchstone in music and pop culture, not many artists get to experience this smile emoticon
Facts:
The single hit number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1987 besting the chart peak of her group Shalamar Top 10 “The Second Time Around.” “Looking For A New Love” spent four weeks at number-one on the Billboard R&B chart another notable achievement. The single was kept out of the top spot of the Hot 100 by Cutting Crew’s “(I Just) Died in Your Arms” and U2’s “With or Without You”. It ranked number 16 on Billboard’s year-end chart for 1987. The single would also reach #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Play Chart.

In 1988 the song was nominated for two Soul Train Music Awards for Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video, and Best R&B/Soul Single, Female. She was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, winning the The GRAMMYs for Best New Artist.

One of the song’s key phrases became a popular saying: “Hasta la vista, baby.” It wound up on innumerable answering machines and was used by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

2005 Reissue
In 2005, Jody Watley re-recorded and released “Looking for a New Love” on Water Music Records in conjunction with her own Avitone label, Curvve Recordings, and Peace Bisquit. The reissued classic was remixed in various styles: house, electro, breakbeat. The newly imagined “Looking for a New Love” proved to be a historic undertaking for Watley, as it peaked at #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, making her the first artist ever to take the same song to No. 1 in two decades.

Everlasting gratitude to Jheryl Busby, Louil Silas Jr. (RIP) and to all of the MCA Records team at that time including A.D. Washington, Ernie Singleton, Alonzo Miller, Sarah Melendez..who made it happen despite the usual obstacles along the way. I thank Jheryl for believing in me and signing me as well as giving me the freedom to be myself and make a mark – understanding what I wanted to do as an artist and writer, not just a girl..but a woman with a vision.

Always believe in yourself – no matter how many people are trying to bring and tear you down..keep on keeping on. God and the universe always has it’s way.

Another Chapter. Into The Pop Void.

Jody Watley. 1999 ‘Another Chapter’

To those who have only gravitated to my commercial successes – you have missed so much good music. It’s never too late in this digital world to catch up. This project Saturday Night Experience Vol. 1 featuring Jody Watley came at a another pivotal time in my life and career –my enthusiasm had waned for the ‘business’.. 4Hero’s Two Pages renewed it and took me into the world of underground..ambient electronica, dance – my faith and creative juices restored. It wasn’t about commercial pop success – simply the continued journey of an artist, writer and producer..creative spirit.

This review of ‘Another Chapter’ from 1999 is so on point…it remains the perfect New Year’s song..life change song…read it and check it out. “Every story has a beginning, a middle and end — it’s life..”

Here’s to more good things that have never been! Onward. Happy New Year!

Jody Watley ‘Dancer’ on NewNowNext

I’m not generally an artist that gets hyped on views and that sort of thing..but I must say it’s a great feeling to see how quickly ‘Dancer’ has spread throughout Facebook – with over 200,000 views in 5 days. For a veteran artist..this must be some sort of record. The thing that made me happiest as well was the mother from Australia who’s 7 year old son Ollie or as he wants to be called “Bboy Elite” saw the video…and then watched over and over leading to him wanted her to film him dancing to the music of ‘Dancer’ so I could see it (watch it on my Facebook.com/JodyWatleyOfficial). That is what the song is about, the concept of the video – lose yourself – get IN the music.

It’s pretty cool to see this feature on popular music blog NewNowNext – see what they have to say: Here
