“Not everyone fits in with the mainstream. Some are born to be different. They are misfits, individualists, outsiders, and eccentrics that let their freak flags fly. Yet they have found a way to thrive on their own terms, transcending barriers of categorical concepts and popular expectations.” Read the article: Wax Poetics

Jody Watley Chops It Up.

One of the most fun and unpredictable interviews I’ve done – a sports column with Jason Jordan from USA Today. I bet you couldn’t guess that I was great at archery! Here

I’d changed clothes after performing my first solo #1 single “Looking For A New Love” to perform “Still a Thrill.” I loved that funky top hat which I’d purchased in Japan – my style always represents what I’m feeling. I still rock denim and ankle boots but wear them differently..the bra tops, not so much!

Jody Watley Shares A Favorite Holiday Tradition in Hip Hop Weekly

I have so many favorite traditions that my daughter and son have over the years, from baking and decorating cookies, watching a “Charlie Brown Christmas” together and playing the CD which to us really kicks off the spirit of the season. One of our other traditions was the tree trimming party – in the spirit of “Nightlife” that’s the one I shared with Hip Hop Weekly. Christmas and the holiday season isn’t as hectic as it used to be now that my children are young adults. That said, it’s still a time for family, giving and remembering what’s most important in life — it’s really not about the gifts, although I miss Christmas mornings when my kids were little and waking up to see the presents under the tree and that half eaten cookie left for ‘Santa.’

“One of my favorite holiday traditions is to have a tree trimming party. It starts with a great music playlist which is the key to any party, along with good food. Everyone brings an ornament and hangs it on the tree. Over the years I’ve ended up with some amazing ornaments that always evoke a special feeling and a reminder of that person.”

The UK is really bringing the love for “Nightlife” featuring Gerald Brown on backing vocals as the single goes into a highly competitive Pop Top Ten at #6, after peaking in the Top 5 Urban on Music Week Charts. I’m thrilled!!

On Billboard we continue to gain during this jammed packed 4th quarter that always brings a surge of activity for major labels and artists worldwide. That said, we move from #40  to  #31 on the Hot Dance Club Play Charts. It’s In The Music!

Soulbounce Revisits Jody Watley’s 1993 Release “Intimacy”

If you slept on the album, it’s a nice one to discover for the first time or revisit or you haven’t played it in a while. I’d already made a decision with my third album to broaden the scope of my artistry and the songs I wrote and recorded – not wanting to be trapped in the pop box and all that that entailed. I’d accomplished what I’d wanted with my first two albums and wanted to move on creatively. This album also went against the grain of Hip Hop and New Jack Swing which was the dominating sound of this era.

“Intimacy” remains a warm and beautiful album written and recorded during the demise of my marriage and a difficult time in my personal life.
