As a teen K C & The Sunshine Band were a favorite of mine – on Soul Train during my dancer days as soon as the intro would come on to “That’sThe Way I Like It” I would lose my mind with joy. You know the feeling you get when you really love a song and it comes on. To say I’m honored and excited to be on a show with KC & The Sunshine Band all these years later in all of my current reloaded love and appreciation of disco, funk and soul is truly another full circle moment and I can’t wait to share it with Rosero and Nate! “That’s the way I like it uh huh uh huh!” Boogie shoes indeed!

Each interview is a lesson in business and growth – as well setting a few misperceptions straight. Ultimately this is about today – the now and the newly reloaded SHALAMAR how I arrived .. often things are put in our life’s path for a reason and this is one of those things..

I’ve never been to Brazil and am extremely excited to be going there in June with my newly reloaded SHALAMAR. Nate Allen Smith, Rosero McCoy and I are having a great time and continuing to bond offstage and improve upon what we’re doing onstage.
When writing the lyrics to my single and collaboration with Count de Money titled “Nightlife” from PARADISE, I totally channeled classic disco but at the same time focused on how to bring that love of the music, the spirit and soul of it into the now. The concept was always of a ‘worldwide phenomenon’ – that journey continues. It’s in the music!
“NIGHTLIFE” peaked in the Top 20 on Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Singles in 2014 and went into the Top 5 Commercial Pop and Urban in the UK. Music lovers continue to discover the song which is available at digital outlets around the world.

There was a moment during the night of the two sold-out concerts at Yoshi’s where I became choked up with emotion onstage during ‘Full of Fire’ – there was definitely a lot of love in the room at Yoshi’s for both shows for the new SHALAMAR (we rocked the house) and of course the Jody Watley selections as well – filled me with gratitude. It’s in the music!

Filmed at one of the sold out concerts in Japan at Billboard Live. It’s such a blessing to have such a loyal fan base in Japan and to sell out concerts and perform to packed houses off and on since the debut of my solo career. This show featured more dancing that I’ve done in recent years, coming out of a down-tempo ambient electro journey on my last few projects (Saturday Night Experience Vol. 1, Midnight Lounge, The Makeover).
A great time was had by all, and it was a fun way to reintroduce songs from SHALAMAR fitting perfectly with the disco soul theme of PARADISE.
This is not a reunion endeavor with the classic lineup (1979-1983). If that happens it will be a different vibe of course. This is a fresh take with new young talent, among others renowned dancer/choreographer Rosero McCoy (Usher, Beyonce, Britney, Justin Timberlake, America’s next Best Dance Crew, Disney’s Shake it Up and The Sing Off among others). The first half of the new show is SHALAMAR, and then it turns to Jody Watley hits and new music. This is a party!
As always, I’m really excited about the upcoming concerts in Japan at Billboard Live. These concerts will close out an exciting 2014. I hired a new booking agent this year and it’s already paying off. In the past, I chose not to work so much because I was enjoying being a stay at home Mom raising her children though picking and choosing when to travel – a luxury of being a songwriter to so many hit singles. I’ll always be discerning about what and when to take jobs but I do feel a new enthusiasm for this part of the business. With the music of PARADISE, mixed in with a range of curated hits from both catalogs of Jody Watley and the new millennial SHALAMAR ™ adding to the set, it’s even more of a party. Rosero McCoy has done a great job creating new choreography for us. The ladies are enjoying Paul’Michael who brings such a fresh young energy and charm along with his own vocal style. The shows will only get better and we’re having a great time together.
