Rewind. Live Performance of ‘It All Begins With You.’

I posted this yesterday on my social media in celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This performance was while pregnant with my son on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1992 while promoting my “Affairs Of The Heart” album -also performed that night was my single “I’m The One You Need.’ The Arsenio Hall Show was always a great place to showcase music for black artists simply on a merit basis – long before the  “what are the social media numbers, how many followers?” The gatekeepers of today would never allow a show like this.

Around this time I’d performed this single on Good Morning America on MLK Day. My performance earned me an invitation to The White House as the President and First Lady were so moved. It’s an honor I’ll never forget. I also used the opportunity to speak about equality, and support for public education – investing in our youth; definitely inspired by Dr. King. Many know I also recorded this song in honor my my father Rev. John Watley Jr.

“..the more of life I live to see, I feel more like a child – the lessons that I have to learn, I know will take a while – and if it takes eternity I hope your plans for me, surround me with a gift of joy and make my days complete..embrace me with your love and help me rise above – show me the way to keep the faith so I won’t forget to say that it all begins with you..”

We all have the ability to bring positive changes in our lives and in the world each day not to mention the ability to keep the faith and get through barriers and obstacles. You don’t have to be religious (I’m not) to believe in a higher power than all of us and the inner will we have when we keep the faith.

Wattage!

Welcome October! Wishing former President Jimmy Carter and Nobel Peace Prize winner a Happy 95th Birthday!

I had the honor of his invitation to work on Habitat for Humanity back in the 90’s. Both President Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter were super nice people, he’s a true humanitarian and man of the people.

World AIDS Day. Red Hot and Blue Looking Back

It’s interesting to look back on this monumental and important project and remember how my label was so against my being a part of it because of the perceived notion that being a part of HIV and AIDS education and awareness was a bad thing and the mentality of what people would think especially in the Black (urban) community, which one of the reasons I really fought to be a part of this no matter what people thought- it was necessary.

#redhotandblue TV special aired in over 30 countries in #1990. #coleporter songs, which NO ONE was even thinking about covering yet, seemed to speak poignantly to the early days of the #plague #Ivegotyouundermyskin #everytimewesaygoodbye to name a few were poetic reminders of the importance of love, romance, empathy and desire, in an era when people were afraid to even touch one another. We had numerous fights w/the network and sponsors in order to be able to speak directly about #AIDS and #SafeSex. The show featured music videos of nearly every song on the album as well as PSAs and interludes that spoke powerfully to dispell the fear, stigma and hysteria around the epidemic. These amazing #motiongraphics were produced in London, this was when doing any kind of moving graphics was incredibly labor intensive and complicated. The music is #whowantstobeamillionaire by #thompsontwins – for some reason they were the only band to not have a music video in the show, so they were featured here!!

Someone unearthed this Rock The Vote PSA I did back in 1992 for MTV (when it was Music Television). Still true!

I was honored by the invitation from former President Jimmy Carter and will never forget the kindness and warmth from he and his wife. My thoughts and prayers go out to them both after his cancer diagnosis. He’s done many great things in his 90 years, and to my view unheralded for the good he’s done and worked for since leaving office.

Indeed – you really have to love yourself and spread that out into the universe.
