When releasing ‘Winter Nights’ in February my goal was to release a series of seasonal EP’s – with ‘Spring’ on the horizon. Now with the self quarantine my plans will have to adjust to the circumstances of not being able to get into the studio for the full recordings.
“Winter Nights” is as Albumism said “Jody Watley has delivered another dose of sophisticated soul..” is available at all platforms (Apple, iTunes, Amazon, Spotify etc).
The limited edition digi-paks had come in and I was excited to make them available at my concerts in the Jody Watley pop-up tables – that will have to wait. Online is hold hold as well as shipping wouldn’t be an essential outing under this self quarantine for the merchandise team.
Ironically, I’d just finished a song called ‘The Healing.’ The song is perfect for where we’ve all found ourselves. Contemplating if putting ‘Spring’ on hold would be the way to go, the feeling is that the message is one that some may find inspirational in some way, especially now. With that ‘The Healing’ will precede the EP – it’s timely and necessary with a thumping remix from RedTop. Stay tuned.
In the meantime —
Rest in peace to legendary photographer Victor Skrebneski who passed away at the age of 90 years. He leaves behind an indelible archive of iconic images from launching the career of supermodel Cindy Crawford, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Iman, Bette Davis, Orson Welles Andy Warhol among so many others.
A few of my favorites with Ms. Ross –
I had to honor to work with him for an unprecedented 16 pages for the 1995 Saks Fifth Avenue Fall Catalog. Here are a few of the images, thank you Mr. Skrebneski – Rest Well.
All Jody Watley music is available at the streaming service of your choice – tops with my fans is consistently Spotify – thanks to all who continue to listen to the music from the classics to the current releases and adding to your personal playlists.

While we’re all self quarantining and dealing with the current coronavirus / Covid19 pandemic; I’ll keep the music updates coming, wellness posts and so on – those things are not cancelled!
Follow my artist pages on the platform of your choice – you’ll find the current releases including “Winter Nights” EP along with the classics and some you may have missed.
Nothing like the live experience with everyone together as one in the music.:::
ALL of my upcoming shows have been cancelled or postponed, no bookings being accepted until further notice – health and wellness are of utmost importance during this pandemic.
Love, good health and positive vibes to all until we see each other again in the live setting. I’ll be writing more, reading more books I’ve been wanting to get to working on projects (Spring EP is done and being mixed..working on Summer w new collaboration with The APX), listening to lots of music, still getting my cardio and workouts at home and hopefully a maintain a healthy lifestyle. What else? Definitely watch some NBA classics, documentaries, continue learning about business, maybe binge watch shows I’ve never seen only heard about .. doing more things I enjoy around the house, maybe I’ll finish my memoir too, get my sketch book out, take more naps and rest …times like these remind us not to take things for granted, that’s why living in the moment is always important, especially when you’re having a good time, things can change in an instant.
Already a longtime self-isolator so that part won’t be hard. I’ll continue posting and staying connected with you each day.
The impact will be strong for many musicians, independent contractors workers of all types ,families, young students and so on – here’s to all of you making it through ok too.
Ps..stop buying up all the TP (lol) keep a sense of humor.. don’t lose sight of kindness when you’re in the stores stocking up on food and necessities, stay diligent but calm.. and please don’t forget the elderly, donate to programs that will continue to provide for children who may not have food now that there is no school at the moment..

Jody Watley – Best New Artist 1987.
That same night, U2 won Album of The Year for Joshua Tree, Somewhere Out There won Song of The Year.
Little Richard made it one of TV’s most iconic moments in Grammy history – in an impromptu rant (a fun but true one) in that he’d never been recognized nor received any awards as The Architect of Rock & Roll. It lasted nearly 5 minutes – while all of the nominees waited in angst to hopefully hear their name.
Michael Jackson performed a rousing ‘The Way You Make Me Feel/Man In The Mirror’ and was the first person to greet me as I exited the stage in tears – he emerged with a big smile, hug and kiss saying “I’m so happy for you.” That made the night even more special..especially since there was a time in my youth I was writing him fan mail!
I shocked everyone – including me – by winning Best New Artist and have said I could have retired that night on that album in terms of a statement debut that no one predicted and to everyone who told me I’d never succeed and would regret leaving Shalamar — That day has never and will never come. I’m full of gratitude and know that regardless of the outcome of the awards ceremony I’d already won by choosing to live the life I wanted – happy no matter the obstacles.
Continuing to do the best work with as much joy and integrity possible in a challenging industry, always fearless, changing and growing as I vowed to do decades ago and to get better with time.. not to be the most popular, just to be the best I can be for me as an artist, writer, producer and human being. That year – I kicked ass, set some style trends and kept it moving on to the next and still doing the damn thing – my way.
Thanks to all of the UK and European Soul Radio Stations spinning songs from “Winter Nights’ EP! To those in America who are wondering – this project nor any recent ones have been serviced to American radio — no pay for play, I don’t do rap and I a woman over 35.. so it would be a waste of resources. The music is here for all to support by use of social media and digital outlets. It’s a choice not to invest in a PR campaign here in USA why? Unlike many moons ago and the old model that most commercial minded fans think still exist where shows would have you on just to talk about your latest music project – that model went out in the late 90’s. I began my indie label Avitone in the 90’s one of the first women, former major label artists to do so – no headlines.
Most high profile TV shows now despite hit records and a vast list of accolades to get booked they want gossip and sensationalism. I don’t wish to discuss my private life, there’s no have a health issue or high profile romance to publicize, have not been to rehab..have not had a baby lately (smile) and so on. I’m just here for the music and appreciate those who are here for it too! The world exists far beyond this American bubble – and it’s an incredible feat to still be charting records anywhere – not many veteran artists especially black female artists can say that – on top of that to be self released on my own label. Thanks to a great small team who continue to work with so much passion on my behalf. Some will of course try to dismiss this latest milestone – keep doubting as I continue to proceed and succeed on my own terms.
