Though some may say an EP doesn’t count as an album, her new set, Paradise, is still a cohesive blend of disco-infused house, soul and jazz that proclaims Ms. Watley is back! Mark de Clive-Lowe makes his impression felt on Paradise, handling production chores on the album’s title track, “The Dawn” and “Tonight’s the Night (MdCL Remix).” “Paradise” the song is a perfect convergence of down-tempo electronica, tropical atmospherics and synth-driven jazz, featuring an almost a cappella delivery of the lyrics by Watley. One of the definitions of a rendering is an interpretation or translation of art that’s what I thought about as I listened to Alex’s mixes that he was inspired to do on songs from my critically acclaimed “The Makeover’ and ‘Midnight Lounge’ electronic soul fused projects. I recognize that not everyone is up on everything I’ve done and quality music can be fresh discovered for the first time, especially in the digital age. All of the curated selections are danceable with meaningful lyrics from the empowering “A Beautiful Life”, the thought provoking “Clouds”, the relationship angst of “More”, the uplifting “Whenever” and the poignancy of “Not A Single Day” it’s a well round mini collection.
Looking at the art Shawn did for Instagram which is a mash-up of images classic and new which I immediately thought would be a cool piece of music artwork in a cover.
What I realize being on social media is that people discover and rediscover things all the time – something is always new to someone seeing or hearing anything for the first time. It’s also important to continue to be inspired and it may come in the most unexpected ways and sources.
The new anthem “Not A Single Day Goes By’ featuring Levi Seacer formerly of Prince’s NPG had been on my mind with so much loss of life and it being a song in remembrance of those who are no longer with us, sent to Alex to put his touch on it – so here we are!
