Jody Watley Thursday Classic. A Chat With Dick Clark on Iconic TV Show American Bandstand.

Music. Fashion. Everything.

In 1987 after performing one of my hits from solo debut.. I think it was my second time from that album, chatting with Dick Clark on his American Bandstand. Music – Fashion – Jody Watley Style. I remember vividly Patti Labelle telling me at an American Music Awards “..a lot of people don’e get your style, but I do – It’s magazine baby, Magazine!”

Always be yourself whether people get you or not, has always been my thing.

Blessed to still be here – still a thrill being myself and doing what I love

Jody Watley. Happy Music Anniversary 32 to My Solo Debut.

Thanks to those who still rock and roll with me and my music in all of it’s continued incarnations beyond my debut into the NOW!

Eternal thanks to all involved who helped me execute my vision and exceed all expectations.

It’s not years of life of music – it’s the life in living life and good music which has no expiration date and continues to be discovered and appreciated.

Jody Watley. Music and Life. The Tough Decisions.

jody-watley__profile2018

Navigating life and career.  Ended 2018 having to make a difficult business decision after a year of contemplation and coming to terms with hard realizations. There are times in life personally and professionally in order to continue to grow, it’s necessary to make changes, and allow others to do the same.  In the tough decisions especially for entrepreneurs or those with whom you’ve had a close relationship and the lines may have been blurred it’s even harder it will be taken personally when it’s not. Business is business and it’s wise to always keep that in mind.

Often the only person who can see a vision is you, it’s not a cold hearted thing, it’s the ongoing evolution of being and willingness to step out of comfort zones- not everyone is going to be on that same page or path. Never one to shy away from my instincts is something to never fear or avoid – no matter how difficult. Stay stagnant, rigid and stuck – or keep pushing for new levels. You never know until you try and do is also one of my life mantras.

Being able to be close to home to be there and present for my ailing Mom continues to be a priority in the midst of the music, just as it was when I was raising my daughter and son. I’ve cut back on some travel and concerts such as putting off shows in Glasgow and Manchester to make sure I’m never too far away. The process continues to push me into an even more reflective mode about life in general. One of the things my Mom has said when talking to one of her doctors on a bad day and through pain that really resonates “..no matter what, I’m happy to still be here..fighting..” – words to live by.

If you see that I’m coming to your city – don’t miss it. As an artist never been one to do a ton of dates to begin with it’s always a quality over quantity always – that keeps it fun. 2019 will include select dates, some of the schedule has had to be revised, always an experience of good vibes, memories, creating new ones and inspiration.

Stay tuned for info on upcoming new music projects as well!

Jody Watley Art by Shawn West.

Jody Watley, multi-platinum singer/songwriter/producer/independent label owner and style icon is one of the architects of 21st century Pop/R&B/Dance music.

From her groundbreaking marriage of rap & R&B (1987’s “Friends,” a collaboration with hip-hop legends Eric B. & Rakim) to her vision-forward marriage of high fashion, street fashion and music in the ‘80s (long before it became the norm), to her fusion of jazz and underground club culture with keen pop instincts, and the ease with which she crossed and still crosses genre, Watley forged the template that is now everybody’s playbook.

Listed as one of Billboard Magazine’s Top Female Artists and Top Dance Artists of All Time in 2018; Winner of the Best New Artist Grammy in 1987, Jody Watley’s entire career has been about looking forward, drawing inspiration from personal heroes and iconoclasts always ten steps ahead of the pack since her days as the original female lead and sound of the group Shalamar. The Chicago native’s eclectic repertoire – R&B, hip-hop, House, jazz, pop, drum & bass, ambient, spoken-word – is built on a positive vision and a strong taste for artistic and aesthetic risk. The Jody Watley concert experience is an energetic thoughtful music journey in any format from the full comprehensive concert, pop freestyle, 80’s, 90’s, intimate jazz, love and soul, to her Shalamar disco funk days to the new UK hits with SRL..there’s something for everyone depending on the configuration and event.”
