Salute to Bernard Edwards. Birthday Remembrance Born October 31, 1952. Most don’t realize Bernard renowned for his work with Nile Rodgers & CHIC, The Chic Organization, Diana Ross, Sister Sledge to name a few helping redefine soul and disco music in so many ways.
Bernard Edwards also produced 3 songs on my solo debut “Don’t You Want Me” written with my BFF Franne Golde – my duet with George Michael “Learn To Say No” and “Love Injection” – powerhouse drummer Tony Thompson was also on those tracks as well. Before I secured a solo deal I asked Bernard if he’d produce some songs on my debut album and he kept his word, just like George Michael. Having Bernard on board also helped me get signed to have such a respected legend on board and in full support.
Rest in Eternal peace with love and respect to Bernard Edwards, a super nice person to have known.
Originally meeting him when I was in Shalamar I was /am a huge Chic fan and most all of their productions— I fondly recall Bernard gifting me a fabulous pair of red suede #maudfrizon (who was all the rage with fashionistas at the time) – disco roller skates with metallic stars – they were of course very chic! To have worked with him is very special, the music always lives on.
I’ve never been to Brazil and am extremely excited to be going there in June with my newly reloaded SHALAMAR. Nate Allen Smith, Rosero McCoy and I are having a great time and continuing to bond offstage and improve upon what we’re doing onstage.
When writing the lyrics to my single and collaboration with Count de Money titled “Nightlife” from PARADISE, I totally channeled classic disco but at the same time focused on how to bring that love of the music, the spirit and soul of it into the now. The concept was always of a ‘worldwide phenomenon’ – that journey continues. It’s in the music!
“NIGHTLIFE” peaked in the Top 20 on Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Singles in 2014 and went into the Top 5 Commercial Pop and Urban in the UK. Music lovers continue to discover the song which is available at digital outlets around the world.
On April 27, I’ll be doing another brief guest appearance with another collaborator Mark de Clive-Lowe at the Spring edition 2013 of his CHURCH residency at The LIft. Details here: http://mashibeats.blogspot.com/
My forthcoming new single “Nightlife” which I wrote with as is co-produced by Count De Money out of the UK courtesy of Bill Coleman and Peace Bisquit is scheduled for this summer. The single is a glamorous slice of soul, disco and funk – Nile Rodgers will be proud. We’re looking at the end of June as a target release timeframe. I’ll be posting another preview soon, as well as a few concert highlights from my recent successful run at Billboard Live Japan.
