Sunsets and Dancefloor is a small capsule reflecting a bit of my eclectic taste in music from jazz, Soul, dance, classic disco and modern funk. A choice 17.
To mark the occasion the video premieres today!
For my second live TV special in Japan – it was exciting to have it be Jody Watley and Shalamar Reloaded – so it was a first for the group. Exciting for me because I’m never jaded..and exciting for Nate and Rosero. The special was broadcast on Fuji TV Next on January 19 and will re-air.
I’m always so grateful and continue to work hard and keep positive spirits up. When I think of the vitriol and some of the wasted energy some direct my way..I just keep on keeping on and accepting the lessons and blessings of God and the universe. This is my recommendation to anyone in life – just keep on keeping on and never be distracted by people and things that in the long run of life are irrelevant to the journey..though they may also inadvertently inspire you to exceed even your own expectations.

As always, I’m really excited about the upcoming concerts in Japan at Billboard Live. These concerts will close out an exciting 2014. I hired a new booking agent this year and it’s already paying off. In the past, I chose not to work so much because I was enjoying being a stay at home Mom raising her children though picking and choosing when to travel – a luxury of being a songwriter to so many hit singles. I’ll always be discerning about what and when to take jobs but I do feel a new enthusiasm for this part of the business. With the music of PARADISE, mixed in with a range of curated hits from both catalogs of Jody Watley and the new millennial SHALAMAR ™ adding to the set, it’s even more of a party. Rosero McCoy has done a great job creating new choreography for us. The ladies are enjoying Paul’Michael who brings such a fresh young energy and charm along with his own vocal style. The shows will only get better and we’re having a great time together. The show at Cache Creek Casino and Resort was a sold-out funky party from start to finish. This is a must see concert if you’re in to great music and entertainment. It doesn’t feel like a rote exercise in nostalgia because it’s not – although filled with classics.
The show begins with a rebooted SHALAMAR ™ featuring new young vocalist Paul/Michael Bair and for now renowned choreographer / dancer / vocalist Rosero McCoy. Some people want the thought of a reunion of the classic 3 lineup and of course I understand. The invitation has been extended again from my part – it is on the table whenever the business and creative is sorted, with my former classic 3 members Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewett.
This is a different vibe and no one will be disappointed if coming to embrace great entertainment, singing and dancing. At the start, original lead vocalist Gerald Brown “Take That To The Bank” was going to be a part of this new endeavor, however it didn’t work out with him. When that happened, I did reach out to Howard and offer an invitation to join us. He declined and wished me well with it.
This concert begins with SHALAMAR ™ and ends in a funky beat down with some of my signature solo hits and new music from PARADISE including the hit single ‘NIGHTLIFE.’
This is a strong show, not simply because of the hits but because it’s fresh with spot on choreography, chemistry and style. The vocal blend is on point, and Paul’Michael’s tone fits perfectly. The universe always has it’s way.

Here are some photo’s from my recent Japan Tour in Osaka and Tokyo at Billboard Live. Stellar shows, fans, staff — my favorite place to perform. Fans really watch and participate in the shows – no one is filming or taking pictures, they respect the policies. When I perform a ballad or speak – they listen, no one talking, this as an artist is greatly appreciated so respectful; no distractions.
It’s In The Music!!
I’m going to miss being with them on my UK appearances as a part of David Gest Presents: Legends of Soul Concert Tour. Hopefully, my abbreviated appearances on this tour will kindle the fire to get us all over to do my dynamic show and present the full Jody Watley live concert experience.
I’m behind on posting clips from my recent sold out shows in Japan at Billboard Live – so here goes. This year’s shows include a sizzling and funky Shalamar medley (of which I was an an original member – still unknown and a surprise to fans who only know my solo work). The reason I’ve worked to include a touch of Shalamar in my shows this time around beyond the theme is more classic hits and beyond – is they fit perfectly with the dance funk hints of disco soul found on a few songs on my forthcoming new album tentatively titled “CHAMELEON” (originally conceived because I’ve always changed and adapted but never tried to blend in) though lately leaning heavily on “My Corner of The Universe”; which is what I continue to carve out through my music and what I hope everyone is able to do joyfully as I do with your own lives.
