Jody Watley and SRL. Detroit Grand Prix

An exciting blend of grand prix racing, and various other family activities related to race car driving and a splash of music added in – that was the Detroit Grand Prix. The day started out cloudy with some rain sprinkles but by the time we hit the stage at 1 PM. the sun was shining brightly.

Here are a few photo’s. A few video snippets to come.

Her nickname is Heaven, she’s 6 this was her first concert. She became an instant fan – created this art and it was given to me after the show.  The song ‘The Passion’ by SRL really made an impression, it’s the first thing on her drawing – it’s about believing in yourself and she heard me. I had them bring her backstage to meet..and gifted her a signed handheld fan and t-shirts for her and her Mom. It’s in The Music!

Jody Watley and SRL Good Vibes From Coast to Coast.

I trust that amidst the various chaos and tragedies occurring somewhere in the world each day – you are reminding yourselves to control what you can and not stress over what is out of reach. Keep your patience, compassion and kindness always within your heart and remember to cherish and enjoy each day no matter the obstacles that you may face on any given day. It may be a simplistic outlook, however I don’t know know any other way to live or to encourage others. Laugh a lot, love hard including yourself..as well as my ‘Sanctuary’ reminds – “..fill these walls with happy times and fill these rooms with peace of mind..” and always good vibes into the universe. We should all work to be the change we seek in the most positive ways.

To bring you up to date on activities the past week:

I was honored at Long Beach Pride on May 21, 2017 by Senator Ricardo Lara with a California State Resolution. The LGBTQ community has always been a friend to me and my music throughout my career and I’ve always worked to reciprocate the love and support – before it was accepted in the mainstream.

Nate, Rosero and I have spent the past few months continuing to work on our forthcoming “Bridges” full length. It’s quite eclectic with each of our own personalities reflected and the creative bond we also share as a group. As Rosero says, it’s for millennials, club kids, people who like to kick back, people who like some introspection..all of it – truly bridging the gaps bringing it all together for this era and into the future. Rosero is the nightlife club person and he always has the pulse of the dancefloor from what he calls more hard ‘street’ beats to house, Nate is totally a combination of romance, feel good soul music mixed with nu electronic soul..I’m always of course very diverse in my musical directions – so it’s cool to also step back and be open to their ideas and vice versa. SRL will be joining me on upcoming concert dates starting up again on Sunday closing out Long Beach Pride for an expected audience of 10,000. It’s all about love – a passion for living, a passion for life.

We’ve updated our logo, to a more 3D multi-dimensional look that is also chic and contemporary – which reflects who we are as a group. We’ve been changing things up since we got together in 2015..that’s what it’s all about, never settle, always looking at things and keeping the perspective fresh and evolving. The same principles I’ve applied to my solo career.

Jody Watley Confirmed for Chicago Morning Television. April Updates.

Jody Watley Shalamar Reloaded SRL Nate Smith Rosero at Nates 1

At Nate’s home for a creative session for “Bridges.”

No illusions or delusions – doing me in the now and grateful to still be doing what I love in ways that bring rejuvenation to us all.

April has remained a month of creativity, writing – stepping away, gathering thoughts and coming back to new ideas for my solo work as well as SRL’s “Bridges.” I can say the collaborative give and take in the process of making this record is cool. We don’t agree upon everything, but always come to a meeting of the minds and always end up in a really good place – we’re a real group.. the awesome thing is in our differences (i.e. I think this song could be stronger, or I think we should do.. whatever it is) the respect of each other and the laughter that comes out of it all in the end is something we’re really enjoying. One of the things that came out of the last session is both Rosero and Nate saying “you sometimes downplay yourself too much..you’re  J O D Y W A T L E Y and maybe because maybe in the past you’ve been around people who haven’t always respected or lifted you up..we do.” That meant so much and they were right. These men are awesome and such a gift on this journey. It was fun as well because Nate really laid out the food situation..when we’re at Rosero’s it’s a running joke he never has any food.

Grammy winning artist Jody Watley was ranked by Billboard Magazine in 2016 as one of the Greatest Dance Club Acts of All Time and hailed by Wax Poetics’s Dean Van Nguyen as one of music’s prominent visionaries.Jody Watley’s groundbreaking career as solo artist kicked off with her debut album “Jody Watley” whose chart-topping lead single “Looking for a New Love” launched the Watley-penned catch phrase “Hasta la vista, baby,” into pop culture vernacular, garnered the prestigious “Best New Artist” award and countless nominations and hits that have followed over the course of decades in her career. January 2017 marks the 30th Anniversary of the debut release single and self titled album. “Who knew writing a song about a guy who had done me wrong would turn out be the beginning of such an incredible journey..” she states.Since her days as the original female lead vocalist of the R&B trio Shalamar departing in 1983; Jody Watley emerged as always ahead of the pop culture curve. As quiet as it’s sometimes kept, Jody Watley has been at the forefront of some of the most groundbreaking trends and movements in modern pop culture and serves as the style template for today’s women in contemporary music. Jumbo hoop earrings, cutting edge hi low street style, layouts in popular magazines, fashion forward video’s and messages of self empowerment; call it the Jody Watley effect. She made political statements and early LGBTQ and HIV awareness before it was trendy and accepted, music and music video innovation in her own distinct style and message of individuality, she is the place where all those tracks meet. An award winning songwriter, producer and businesswoman owning her label formed in 1995 Avitone this venerable artist continues to create her own unique path. The video for her 1987 hit “Still a Thrill” was the first time a major pop star showcased waacking, the underground freestyle dance (an even more beat-driven cousin to voguing) that is now a worldwide phenomenon; her classic 1989 cut “Friends” carved the template for both R&B/hip-hop and pop/hip-hop fusions to come, being the first time a rapper (the legendary Rakim, of Eric B. & Rakim) wrote original verses for an R&B/ pop song and it’s video fusing club culture with b-boys, club kids, transgender and drag queens with fashionista’s; long before making his mark as a film director, David Fincher (Se7en; Fight Club; Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) cut his artistic teeth on Miss Watley’s sleek music video for 1989’s smash hit “Real Love,” premiering a signature visual style that he would later impart to other pop divas and fine tune for his films; in honor of her visionary fusion of fashion, music, and music videos, Jody Watley was featured in VOGUE Italia’s groundbreaking “Black Issue” in 2008 as an homage to opening the door for acceptance between music and fashion in the mainstream with early appearances in starting with her debut in VOGUE, Harper’s Bazaar and Rolling Stone and countless magazines around the world.Jody Watley will bring her dynamic celebratory anniversary concert with a spotlight on decades of solo hits in various genres with a spotlight on new music from their forthcoming debut “Bridges” featuring her new group SRL with Nate Allen Smith and renowned choreographer Rosero McCoy is already garnering media attention and rave reviews and set to release their debut album in 2017.Jody Watley 30, the concert is a celebration of “Jody Watley” the debut and an enduring career that continues to evolve and surprise; showing no signs of slowing down.
