Nightlife On Soulbounce. A Classic Soul Treatment.

Soulbounce

There are so many choices with “Nightlife” from the original to remixes by Moto Blanco, Jodie Harsh, Dave Doyle, Soulpersona – all out of the UK, and Luminodisco from Italy.

I kept hearing Phyllis Hyman and the Philly Soul vibe in my head and wanted to hear “Nightlife” mashed up with it. Morgan aka Soulpersona, whose classic disco mix is already getting a lot of love; was down to help turn the vision to reality. The “Phyllis Classic Soul Mix”, no samples used by the way and turns the room changing things up as a duet with Gerald Brown, another Shalamar original and I- see what they have to say on Soulbounce and have a listen to the mix as well: HERE

Nightlife Vaults Into The Top Ten in The UK. Life. Self Belief and Faith.

JodyWatley_NIGHTLIFE_SINGLECOVER_1

“Nightlife” will jump into the Top Ten Music Week Urban Chart next week and enter the Pop Top 40 at #40.  I’m never jaded or cynical about this musical journey the way a lot of veteran artists get. I’ve not wanted to surrender myself the easy and often lucrative ‘nostalgia’ circuit and rely solely on my back catalogue. Cultivating  new fans has always been important to me, Being in the ‘Now’ has always been important to me because it’s good for the spirit and keeps close the fact that each day we live is a new opportunity for something good if we want it.

You have no idea how difficult it is to make it as an artist – and it gets harder the older you get no matter how much success you’ve had previously and especially when you’re always wanting to be authentic in a business that works hard to turn artists into what you are not. It’s difficult when you choose to not sell out for the true big money in many cases as well as not wanting to become a parody of your former self, desperate to find relevance in pop culture. It’s difficult being a woman, getting marginalized or resented because you have standards and care about the details of business. Add in being a black woman who would not stay in that box of expectation (be more street, more urban, more this, more that..market a down-trodden story or upbringing to be relatable..as if women if any race aren’t multifaceted and multi-dimrnsional with different tastes, thoughts..)  I don’t have a major label push and haven’t had one since the 90’s nor a big budget or corporate machine or industry ‘gatekeepers’  as they’re called in certain circles in the know. But none of that has discouraged me from continuing to make quality music and to grow as an artist, songwriter and producer. I’ve never had the machine behind me to be honest, yet I’ve always managed to prevail. Why? Among other things thank you to God and the universe -having an endless abundance of determination and passion for what I do, you must have that. Standing always for what I believe in with my art on my path regardless of what others say or believe along the way has always been key. I contemplated retiring from music in 1998 and discovered the rich underground scene and electronica in 1999 – the music and artists in that scene rejuvenated me creatively. It’s in the music and about the music, to entertain, inspire, uplift and create some escape through the music. Being on the charts at a high level in each decade since I began in Shalamar in 1977 – 80’s, 90’s 00’s and now into the 10’s is something to be grateful and appreciative of – it’s rare. What I do has never been for the charts per se, but the joy and happiness I get from doing what I love. Anything worth having is worth fighting and working hard for. Many people have delighted in my stumbles along the way, and Im sure there will be more – but I’m never deterred always positive and motivated. It’s not about how many times you get knocked down – it’s how many times you get up and what’s learned from the experience; living joyfully in that notion.

So I say in pushing forward –Believe, work hard, pray, meditate, plan, execute the plan, revise when needed, step away and live life keeping perspective not the perception of others — trust in yourself and your instincts, there is no failure unless you never try– I raised my children to believe that about themselves -surround yourself with a few good people who feel the same and keep pushing. That’s for anyone reading this – artist or simply a human being no matter what your profession or what your reaching for. Go in the cave from time to time when you need to feel on your lone island – pain, frustration, sadness, whatever you need – but come out swinging and rejuvenated! Keep it pushing – forward.

Jody Watley. Nightlife Update For October

Disco Fabulous! Jody Watley. Photography: Albert Sanchez. Make-Up: Billy B.

This month was exciting with new developments as the single continues to build and be well received from the urban base which is where I chose to start the campaign. I completed a whirlwind and jam-packed press trip to New York. I was thrilled it coincided with my son’s birthday week and that we got to spend time together and celebrate his birthday while I was there – between his schedule for work and college.

In the UK “Nightlife” will enter the Music Week Urban Chart at #20 next week (charts are always a week out by date). I’m so happy about this! In the UK, we haven’t begun to go for chart positions on the commercial club end of things, though the single is getting a solid 8 out of 10 with DJ’s who continue to support it with club kids dancing to it. Things are boding well for the dance chart as well. In America, I’ve just hired Maxi-Promotion who my company has worked with on previous singles for “The Makeover” – to great dance floor and chart success. The single will officially go out to U.S. clubs next week. Though we live in a digital age and things seem to move quickly and at times they do, working records independently it’s all about continued word of mouth and building “Nightlife” organically. I’m in no rush as I’ve mentioned previously. This is not a corporate push where music tends to come and go at a rapid pace. It’s been the goal to work this single through years end into the start of 2014 and that’s what’s happening.

The remixes are scheduled for November 4. I must say, “Nightlife Remixed” is one of my favorite remix packages with stellar production from Moto Blanco, Jodie Harsh, Dave Doyle, Soulpersona and Luminodisco. There’s also a new bonus Soulpersona Classic Soul Phyllis Remix that I’m excited about that features Gerald “Take That To The Bank” Brown as a duet. It’s really the closet thing there’s been to a new Shalamar duet record with originals since 1978 – pretty monumental.   The remix is also my way of acknowledging one of music’s great female singers and production teams in the 70’s and 80’s (Reggie Lucas and James Mtume) they were the inspiration for the “Classic Soul Phyllis Remix.” My Yahoo Music interview should be going up any day now, as well as some of the other interviews I’ve done this month including Jet, Essence, Ebony, Eurweb, Hello Beautiful, Urban Daily, Hype Hair, Black Hair Sophisticates and more.

The “Nightlife” video is still being edited and pieced together as it’s not a typical video. I’ve had a few of my friends submit short clips of their “Nightlife” to be included as well. Catch me with Donal Ware on Box to Row 1PM ET/12CT SiriusXM Channel 141 Friday October 25 you can also listen here: http://www.boxtorow.com/lunchonsiriusxm.php Catch me or DVR:  Access Hollywood Live Tuesday October 29, 2013, I’ll be LIVE on air in the UK on JEMM1 Radio October 30 with Phil Marriot 6 PM British Time — stay tuned – more to come!

I’m also excited that I’ll be doing V magazine for their special music issue!

Save a date in late June 2014 – I can’t tell you why, but remember this post. PS. -No, I’m not getting married, lol.

A special thank you to Juanita Stephens PR and all of the early supporters including the fans of “Nightlife” and the forthcoming “Paradise.” “It’s In The Music!

The infectious NEW single “Nightlife:” Available at iTunes, Google Play, Amazon and other select digital outlets. “Nightlife” Remixed due to be released November 4, followed by the full video for the single. In the meantime, enjoy and share the “Nightlife” and BE Fabulous!

Jody Watley will be a part of the popular and always sold out David Gest Presents : Legends of Soul Tour. Of late, I’ve had to answer this question- No, I am NOT a part of the Shalamar show at IndigO2 in London  being advertised for December using old photo’s or silhouettes of my likeness giving the illusion that the show includes Jody Watley. I’ve not toured with Shalamar since 1983 when I departed the group. This is an ongoing issue of false advertising going on for several years now that I’ve been trying to resolve before moving to litigation.

If you’re in the UK make sure to check Jody Watley out as a part of the renowned and popular David Gest Presents: Legends of Soul Tour:
