Jody Watley 2017 Favorites

2017 was another memorable year on the journey.

Here are some of my favorite moments topped with being the recipient of 2017 Crossover Music Icon on the broadcast new awards show Black Music Honors. One of the special elements of the show is their connection with National Museum of African American Music. The sculpture “Traveling Through Time Rhapsody and Rhythm” represents 50 plus genres of African American Music spanning 400 years of American culture designed by Jamaal B. Sheats exemplifying the mission of NMAAM to celebrate, preserve and educate contributions African Americans make to American music.

The music tribute by Sevyn Streeter and Vivian Greene was beautifully done.

Great Concerts – one of my favorite was The Greek Theatre Freestyle Festival and I really enjoy the different of generations and diversity in my squad. The little ones call themselves WatleyBabies. Music transcends all to those open to it.

Jody Watley and SRL Update. Another Successful Japan Tour and New Ground In Beijing.

The fans were delighted with the new show in Tokyo and Osaka. Playing to packed and enthusiastic audiences, we really enjoyed seeing the crowd grooving not only to my solo hits and new music but that of SRL as well. The forthcoming ‘Say What’ led by Rosero McCoy is infectious and continued the party with everyone on their feet dancing. My ‘Dancer’ is always a rousing centerpiece and celebration of freestyle prompting people to ‘Get In The Music – Lose Yourself.” Indeed!

After Japan, the guys headed back to the states and I headed off solo to Beijing, China for a special concept show with Japanese based musicians for a show titled “An Evening of Love and Soul”for Valentine’s Day at the gorgeous Blue Note. This show was more ballad and love song based – from my favorite makeovers (Waiting In Vain, After You, Who, Too Shy to Say, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow..) among others sprinkled in with a few of my uptempo hits. It was nice to mix it up. Read the NEW Q&A with The Beijinger: Here

I really hope I’m able to take the guys and my regular band next time with that being said for the fans to get a full experience. The show was sold-out! My heart is full to continue to see the reception of my music not just in America but countries as well. While in Beijing I also had a chance to do some sightseeing – rare. On my list was visiting the Great Wall of China and learning more history about it. In the process, I nearly blew my already injured knee out. It was worth it.
