Jody Watley Life Musings and Paradise

“A Night of Timeless R&B” in Philadelphia on November 15, 2014 was a lot of fun. Doing the new show and it’s blend of classics making them feel new again and the what’s now of PARADISE is energizing. The ladies are enthralled with new addition Paul’Micael Bair handling the male leads of SHALAMAR ™ reminiscent to some of a young El Debarge mixed with Justin Timberlake – while for my ears having his own developing style. It’s really hit packed and energetic from start to finish which ends with some of my own signature solo hits. I met some super people like Brian Walmer who is continuously supportive of the new music, Patty Jackson from WDAS and radio personality Muthaknows. Put your hands in the air doesn’t need much prompting. Good vibes all around.

Once arriving home, I was beyond ecstatic to spend a week with my daughter Lauren who was visiting from the bay. Cooking, just hanging out in our lightweights aka pajama’s or comfy clothes  – getting to watch “Scandal” together, talking politics, current events, pop culture..dining out, shopping for makeup at our favorite spot and just overall spending time being together. I’m so happy that we have the relationship we do and that I put the time in from day one to be present – and remain so. I cherish time spent with family and friends. The week was capped off with dinner at our favorite Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse with my Mom and one of my nieces. We shared so many laughs – the only person missing was my son Arie, we had a creme brûlée’ for him – this is life!

Skyview, counting my blessings, reflecting on a wonderful trip, looking forward to coming home as always and praying for a safe landing!

Typical Mom snapping pictures of my baby girl - so regal, beautiful and smart..neither of my children like taking pictures but they always indulge me!

© 2014 Jody Watley I’m just a typical Mom, when I’m not the artist – snapping pictures of my  stunning baby girl always in awe of  HER – so regal, beautiful and smart..neither of my children like taking pictures but they always indulge me. Lauren was having her makeup done at NARS – she rarely wears makeup. We were served champagne, which felt very chic – while we enjoyed the process,, stocked up on new colors and enjoyed mother daughter time.

Celebrating one of my closet friends choreographer, dancer Rosero McCoy was also on this week’s schedule. Dancing with Rosero and friends (including my other best friend Wallace Butts) was another moment to reflect on the meaningful things in life – and the people we have it our lives. There was one moment we were all dancing and I really took it all in – the moment, the joy, the smiles and thought this is what life’s all about. Not fair weathered or superficial people who come and go at a whim but the people you know who will be there for you, appreciate honesty without holding it against you and always ready to roll through life’s ups and downs, not social climbers – just friends. Laughter, music, dancing, good food, quality people and friendship – indeed another slice of paradise.

Celebrating 25 years of my second album. Most fans think of my solo debut as the breakthrough and it was – as well as being trendsetting in style and video. However my second album is the one that was really quietly the most pioneering and to me overshadowed. My infusion of high fashion, commercial ad campaigns and layouts – uncommon for any black artist at the time, and only by one other Madonna. ‘Larger Than Life’ ushered in a raised bar for other female artists that would follow.  The pioneering “Friends”  featuring Eric B & Rakim; the first to feature Pop/R&B/Hip-Hop 16 bar verses and crossing over R&B, Pop, Dance, Hip Hop – as well as a genre crossing video featuring transgender, drag queens, underground club culture, B-Boys and Girls, voguing and Jean Paul-Gaultier couture blended into a mix of high end and street chic as well as my highest charting ballad ‘Everything.” There was no press release to stir controversy and bring attention about the casting of the video – for me it wasn’t about that. Everyone in the video was real, friends of friends – not models or professionals. Tyrone Procter helped cast it. Eric B and Rakim called some of their friends. What I wanted to represent the types of clubs I liked dancing at full of of types of people united by the music and stepping out in style to get down on the dance floor. It was a real club scene in the west village on a hot summer afternoon in NYC. It went over the heads of a lot of people..my label didn’t know what to make of it, and weren’t happy with it – but let me do what I envisioned and I’m thankful.

I also found success overseas in the Japan, Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom among others as well. It was always a challenge because I wasn’t the typical ‘urban black artist’ and was always in a struggle to shine on my own terms, remaining true to myself, wanting to have standards, authenticity to my artistry. 25 years later this is still true in everything I do whether on the commercial radar or not. It’s true no matter what your job or career is – be the best you.

Partying With The Dukes Of Melrose

jodywatley_dukesofmelrosepartyI attended a smashing party this week presented by Harper’s Bazaar and MCM for Bravo Television’s upcoming new series “The Dukes Of Melrose”, starring Christos Garkinos and Cameron Silver of Decades Inc.  A wonderful time was enjoyed by all! Festive music playlist, full bar and delicious hors d’oeuvres

I came out of my basic black and rocked a vibrant green tunic by Stella McCartney – going for an effortless chic vibe. I kept the make-up minimal with a slight smoky eye, lashes, bronzer on my cheeks and a hint of a NARS pale peach color (can’t read the name on the bottom..need a magnifying glass, lol). The studded black MCM clutch gave it the look a hint of edge, as well as a spiked bracelet – fashion forward. My pumps had a hint of orange for an additional burst of color. I almost chose to wear fuchsia pink pumps but really happy I went with the nude, orange and black combo.

JodyWatley_kiss_on_cheek_ChristosGarkinos_BravoTV_DukesofMelroseParty_2013I was so in love with my friend Christos Garkinos of Decades and his red Paul Smith suit. He’s so excited about the show as are all of his friends, clients and family many of whom were in attendance at the Sunset Tower in West Hollywood, California for the soiree and preview clips.

Jody Watley. The Look.

I don’t wear red lipstick much anymore, it made me feel too much like the old me from my early solo days – well that is until I recently tried the new NARS African Red. It’s perfect, not too bright with more of a blue undertone for a warmer appearance. The look: a classic strong brow (brow maintenance is a must) and cat-eye with black liner, which are two of my favorite beauty signatures and NARS Zen (blush) on my eyes; chic with just a touch of attitude! I pulled my hair back in a chignon – the rain gave it texture if you know what I mean.

I have a longstanding appreciation for classic Hollywood glamour since I was a little girl. Can we say Sophia Loren? There are so many women of that era whose style I admired even without realizing it as a little girl; and still do. A lot of my imagery has at different times been influenced by the classics.

Don’t be afraid to try new colors and products when you have to free time, or while browsing the aisles of your favorite beauty supply store or boutique. Have fun update your look – if you don’t like it just wash it off, it’s only make-up!

I snapped some pics for Instagram, just having fun on a rainy day this weekend – this is one.
