The interview begins with a revelation by the writer, Gerald Radford, which threw me upon reading. His personal bias was something I always suspected with some in the “urban” media which goes back to earlier in my solo career and having mega crossover success – not everyone embraced that. The negative cloud he speaks of is odd because overall I receive so much love in the press and of course from fans in a career spanning decades and with all of the acheivments and benchmarks thus far. A negative cloud hanging over me? I don’t see it. From my point of view only those who resent me for being who I am…and my early solo crossover success, not towing the line, not staying ‘in my place’.. as women as supposed to do in the minds of some is where that exists. I appreciate very much that Gerald remained open and this article was able to be so honest on both of our parts -we had a wonderful conversation. As always, I’m just being myself – living, laughing, loving, learning and hoping it’s contagious to others. There are many things I refrain from saying because I don’t like drama, however sometimes one must let people know what’s really going on.

I consider myself quite blessed to have not only achieved my childhood dreams, but exceeded them. Constantly creating new goals – growing, learning, evolving. Some people don’t like that – the independents, those who don’t fall in line with the status quo..especially women..read the interview: Here

I became the legal and registered trademark owner of SHALAMAR in May of 2014 after a thorough and lengthy process by the USPTO. The acquisition was prompted in part to gain control by the ongoing use and misuse of my likeness and the continued commerce generated from the foundation I helped to create decades ago. There are former members currently trying to confuse the public giving the impression there are two groups brazenly seeking to undermine my rights. My trademark attorneys are handling this matter.

Becoming owner allows me to revive the name for a new audience, to not get stuck in the safety net of nostalgia because I’m not interested in doing what I’ve already done. There’s new merchandise for fans to purchase, with plans for new music and other exciting projects in the pipeline. We have already begun building a social media presence beginning with a verified page on Facebook/ShalamarOfficial.

Joining me for the newly reloaded SHALAMAR are singer/dancer/choreographers Rosero McCoy (Usher, Beyoncé, America’s Next Best Dance Crew, Shake it Up, The Sing Off) and breakout young Ohio talent Nate Allen Smith. Our dynamic stage show to which we’ve already been playing to sold-out audiences in the United States and Japan, with other scheduled concerts in the UK and Brazil breathes new life into classics “A Night To Remember,” “Take That To The Bank,” and “The Second Time Around” in a set that includes signature Jody Watley solo hits like “Friends,” “Looking For a New Love,” and “Don’t You Want Me,” as well as music from Paradise. The album’s first single “Nightlife” was the 19th Billboard Top 20 Dance hit; a UK Top 10 Commercial Pop and UK Top 5 soul hit. This is a new era for SHALAMAR and Jody Watley, artist and entrepreneur. Visit the Official SHALAMAR website: http://www.shalamarofficial.com

In celebration of The GRAMMY’s weekend, this blessing came at the perfect time at that time in my life and career and the goals I had ‘back then’ and the obstacles endured. A lot of people were happy for me – a lot of people are probably still angry and confused how this triumph happened. Some artists never get to experience a moment like this – ever. My tears of joy were genuine and heartfelt-I was stunned. Remember Little Richard taking his well deserved moment to let the people know that as the ‘Architect of Rock and Roll’ he’d never been honored or the recipient of a GRAMMY. It holds a special place in my heart as well because it was New York City, radio City Music Hall and Micheal Jackson performed a riveting ” The Way You Make Me Feel/Man In The Mirror.” The music business and my peers at that time were all heavy hitters. There was so much diversity in R&B/Pop and Rock, though it was already transitioning to the next phase.

I remain full of gratitude with a passion for what I do as an artist, songwriter, producer, entrepreneur decades later – but most of all who I am as a woman/human being – to be a good person through my actions is success. Looking at this younger ambitious part of who I was back then makes me proud because despite everything going on I chose to believe in myself and step out on faith.  Choosing to be happy and in control of my life – remains a constant in the woman I have since become. The love and respect of my children is everything and remaining appreciative of those who continue to support me personally as well in my music career keeps me uplifted in an often treacherous business and world. Never one to back away from a challenge, being fearless and unafraid to make mistakes, lose fans and popularity or any of those things..it’s so much more meaningful to remain authentic and proud of ‘the work.’  Commercial, under the radar, experimental, you name it, it’s all very much me..always going my own way.

Like you, this is a process of continuing to learn and grow. As always, I encourage YOU as well on this journey of life no matter what field of work you’re in. Stay and BE Fabulous!! Make NEW goals and dreams continuing forward.
