My lifestyle is very much a healthy one. I try to watch what I eat, work out, go for daily run walks and always try to keep a balance and positive mind. It’s all about mind, body and spirit. I juice, make morning green smoothies, have reduced my meat, refined sugar and white flour intake (though I won’t turn down hot bread or roles when dining out) – I don’t keep bread in the house. These past couple of years, there’s been a shift in my hormones of course, typical for women from your late 40’s and up. It’s been a big adjustment for me, though I’ve totally been rolling with it. It’s cycle of life. Despite the healthy habits there are about 20 unwanted pounds I can’t get rid of, not wanting to go on hormone therapy. In the midst of this change, I’m mindful to embrace myself where I am now in this stage in life, being older but certainly not old – being alive and vibrant. It’s important to lift ourselves up in our own head no matter what.
I’ve tried fasting many times and have failed – lasting only until sundown, which is practiced in some religions. As with anything in life, you just can’t give up – try again. Focus, faith, prayer/meditation, determination, hard work, mind or matter, whatever it takes – just get it done. This time around, I didn’t plan in advance. After a Sunday of chicken and waffles and mimosa’s after while watching the World Cup, I think my body had enough. Going to to sleep I thought – that’s it tomorrow, I’m doing a one day fast of lemon, water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper – and lots of mineral water which I do drink large quantities of each day no matter what. With the small one day goal – I thought if I make it through, I’ll try again for the juice fast for 3 days taking each day one day at a time and applauding myself for the achievement. Today is the third day of the juice fast, and my fourth day overall with no solid foods. I can’t believe it, the days actually flew by. Juice and water is all I’ve had – and a half cup clear broth last night. Evenings have been the toughest and when my cravings have been strongest. Your mind can really overcome the cravings or anything in life which I’ve always known, but when it comes to this type of willpower it’s a different discipline. I feel great! The next time, I’ll aim for 7 days and eventually 30 of juicing. One step at a time. Balance. Moderation.
I picked up juices from here – if you juice at home, these are terrific combinations, including my favorities: Clean Greens, Block Rocking Beats (spicy!), Charcoal Lemonade, Nut Milk (has vanilla bean and a touch of sweetness), Green Easy, Green Milk, Field of Greens, Redhead.

As I get older, I pay more attention to what I eat. With seafood and fish my recent obsession is where does it come from? I’ve learned ‘farmed’ is not really good – wild is usually best..but even then; where did it come from? I know we have to all go from something, but it’s wise to at least be conscious of what we put into our bodies..even if it all ends up being bad for us..worth a try! I’m often asked what colors I wear on my lips lately, it’s always generally NARS – my favorite line and no I’m not paid to say so. My current favorite combo is the Rikugien Lip Satin Lip Stain and I complete it with a bit of shine with Bimini Lip Gloss or Clear…or if no shine on it’s own. Very nice for spring and when you want something close to natural and just a blush of color.
In my one piece – my current style obsession are jumpsuits.

I’m crazy in love with my nude pumps which compliment just about any outfit. I’m wearing black skinnies with a top my new line “Haute Hippy” – I love the unique print and burst of color to break up the black. My jacket from Zara reminds of a tuxedo jacket with tails by the way it’s cut. It’s a young look – though for me age appropriate (whatever that means, lol) – I always like to funk things up a bit. My blue leather clutch is from Elizabeth and James, the affordable line from The Olsen’s after the success of their ‘The Row.’ Affordable chic at any age. Keep it classic – keep it you!

As we head into the holidays if you plan on attending any parties and having a bit of holiday “Nightlife” – add a statement shoe to your must haves. At any price point, you can find a nice pump. My current favorite is new designer Jerome C. Rousseau. His “Flicker” is one of my favorites!

Update your look! My new fall favorite is NARS Blonde Venus lipstick paired with a smoky eye rather than a red mouth. After watching an episode of Project Runway and seeing m friend and make-up artist Billy B. touting L’Oreal’s Smoldering Voluminous Eyeliner and Liquid Felt Tip Eyeliner I rushed out the following day to purchase both in black and I’m not disappointed in either. My lace top is from H&M. Lace is on trend right now, but it’s another one of those timeless fabrics you can’t go wrong with. The difference in wearing lace now is it won’t be with a bra exposing a lot of skin. I’m wearing a black cotton tank underneath. You can still have a touch of edge and keep it classy – especially if you’re over 40. One of my motto’s is “Just because you can – doesn’t mean you should.”
One of my favorite beauty essentials is this Monai Tiki Tahiti Oil. I use it for my skin and hair. The scent is divine, I call it Hawaiian vacation in a bottle with it’s gentle gardenia scent. For my hair I mix it with olive and jojoba oil. I
I don’t usually like camouflage however, I love these limited edition pumps by 9W Goes Punk by Cameron Silver. They can easily take the place of a black shoe and be worn dressed up or down. I’ll be rocking them with black jeans or slacks.

In an effort to fight father time as well as eat healthier, I continue to expand my extensive food horizons. A recent favorite is the grain “Quinoa,” often referred to as the world’s healthiest food, read, here ..full of healthy protein and antioxidants, it’s a better option or replacement for rice, and easy to combine with other ingredients. My recipe today was quinoa (I tried a frozen brand I bought from Whole Foods), sautéed with a touch of olive oil, garlic, fresh spinach, a dash of sea salt and fresh cracked pepper. Divine, delicious and filling! Try It!

If you drink Naked Juice, you should know that it’s full of chemicals and synthetic substances, the same with Kashi products. It’s important to know what we are consuming. I like juicing at home – that way you know exactly what you’re drinking. Drink lots of water!

Getting older and more aware of just about every subtle change in my body, skin, and overall health- whether I like it or not I’m always mindful to eat and drink as healthy as I can. That includes green juices. I tried wheatgrass and it made me sick and I still blame a bout with vertigo on it!
I juice and blend juices at home, and I recommend it.
This drink of celery, apple, cucumber, spinach, lettuce, lemon and lime juice isn’t bad, though I did pour it into a pretty glass – one of the things I enjoy doing with all of my juices..

Beyond salads, fresh fruit and lots of water, I enjoy smoothies. Whether for breakfast or a meal replacement it’s a can’t miss nutritious addition to your lifestyle of healthy eating. Protein powder, almond or almond coconut milk, frozen berries, banana, orange juice or cold water, a few ice cubes (not always necessary), and a couple of tablespoons of flax oil with high lignan for a dose of omega 3 (promotes healthy skin, hair and nails) — you can also substitute and add ingredients like kale, cucumber, avocado and so on.

Eye creams, gels and serums among other elements in my beauty routine (beyond love, joy, laughter, rest, exercise, stretching, prayer/meditation, etc) are vital. I tend to have puffy eyes, especially during the spring because of allergies. Of course as father time as our companion, if so lucky, will lose elasticity in our skin including the delicate eye area. Some worry about fine lines around the eyes, dark under eye circles – for me it’s puffiness on my upper lids in particular. Barring any type of facial cosmetic work, adding that would be a terrifying option and not sure if I’m vain enough yet, although getting older I look at every new line and change in my body. I’d be lying if not nothing these things cross my mind every now and again. In the meantime, I’ll stick to my eye creams, gels and serums, which I keep refrigerated in place of butter in my fridge. Apply chilled, it’s so refreshing.
Caffeine in particular, peptides, anti-oxidants like vitamin E and C, green tea and cucumber (slices are also good, but be careful) are key ingredients to look for if you also deal with puffy eyes. I’m always trying new things as well and recommend getting samples and trying them out if you can to see what works. I love the benefits of the Garnier Skin Renew anti-puff roller (especially chilled) and that’s not a paid endorsement either!

I just added this new NARS Satin Lip Pencil “Jardin Des Plantes” to my spring make-up kit and absolutely love it. The color has terrific staying power as well. I wore it onstage and it didn’t come off through the sweat, dancing and singing! My nails are also fuchsia, an Essie color I didn’t get the name of at the salon while getting a mani-pedi. Give yourself a pop of color!

There’s nothing like homemade chicken soup full of vitamins, antioxidants and comforting ingredients. The soup (which is also good for the soul) from my kitchen is spicy, flavorful and includes a whole chicken, water, olive oil, garlic, cayenne and crushed peppers along with the onion, garlic cloves, shallots, celery, carrots, bok choy, mixed herbs, a touch of curry powder, noodles and a bay leaf. For the first time I added lemongrass. The aroma of the lemongrass is divine and fills the house. Lemongrass which isn’t to be eaten and more for flavor and aroma: rinse, make small cuts and smash with mallot before putting into pot. Simmer until done. Oh –do the chicken first and de-bone as first step! Add sea salt to taste and cracked pepper once served as well. Yum!

Flax Oil is highly recommended for women as we get older – though it’s good for everyone as a natural anti-oxidant and source to prevent against heart disease, diabetes and breast cancer. I put it in my oatmeal for breakfast (2 tablespoons), as well as in my fruit smoothies. It’s great for your skin, hair and nails. Fresh brows from Anastasia in Beverly Hills and make-up by Isaan before Dukes of Melrose party. It’s amazing what well-groomed brows can do for the face..and of course that pesky facial hair that seems to increase with age! I get waxed above my lip and chin. It’s important the aesthetician isn’t using product that’s too hot, needless to say. It’s imperative as well that following the treatment some form of anti-inflammatory cream, ointment or gel is applied. My skin is really sensitive but beyond the first time I tried it – never have had a problem with bumping or irritated skin.

It does seem that I may not have the genetic make-up to develop muscle definition. I’llcontinue to look for options such as this netted top to keep them covered!

I’ve loved brussel sprouts since I was a little girl – referring to them back then as ‘baby cabbages.’ As it turns out they’re great for keeping your cholesterol low, the fiber is great for the digestive tract. Their total glucosinolate content has been shown to be greater than the amount found in mustard greens, turnip greens, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, or broccoli (according to Whole Foods), and it’s one of those foods that potentially protects against cancer and also good for the thyroid.
I steam them lightly, drizzle a bit of olive oil, a splash of fresh lemon juice, sea salt and cracked pepper. It’s one of my favorite things to have for lunch – no meat. For a dinner option they’re great roasted with a few small new potatoes, rosemary, garlic, red onion, celery, olive oil, sea salt and cracked pepper. It’s filling and low calorie.

One of my food lifestyle routines for years, as I did with my children when they were growing up was to always keep healthy snacks ready in the fridge such as berries in the bowl. This week it’s been all about the strawberries and lots of water!

The holiday season is zooming past at a rapid pace. Sparkly clothes, shoes and accessories remain perfect to spruce up an outfit or make it more festive. I came across a pair of fabulous Louboutins with Swarovski crystals; and though I’m a professed shoe-a-holic can’t imagine dropping nearly $5,000 on a pair of pumps (with tax). I admired the beautiful craftsmanship and kept moving right along. A couple of weeks later – I came across a pair of ‘get the look for less’ at under $50.00! I didn’t get those either, but thought for a night out on the town and a one time wear – why not get the look for less and invest the rest!!

My current favorite night cream is L’Oreal Revitalift (pictured) and Revitalift Night Cream with Retinol – a key ingredient for anti-agers.. I’m not paid to post – but this cream really does seem to do as promised which is to minimize wrinkles.
I also switch it up and go totally natural anti-oxidant and anti-ager with olive oil on my face,neck and hands periodically.
